I’ve heard people say time and time again they don’t want to see anymore slave shows. 2016 was a biggie for television and film with content centered on slavery, with shows such as Underground, the remake of Roots and films like Birth of a Nation. For some people it got too heavy but, I personally feel there’s nothing wrong with films based on history, American history and the history of this United States of America that we call home.
Now here comes the bullshit. Game of Thrones creator David Benioff and D.B. Weiss announced they will be bringing a new show to HBO which will basically show what it would be like if slavery wasn’t abolished. The new show is titled "Confederate" in an excerpt from The Washington Post
“The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the Southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution”
Like I said I’m totally for a retelling of history but to go and write some new slave shit is beyond me. Not to mention Visionary Ava Duvernay has already showed us in real life how slavery has evolved into a modern institution with her Oscar Nominated documentary 13th. I just really don’t see this going over well with viewers I'm disgusted at the thought of anyone being able to write such a script just giving 45 ideas. I’m hoping HBO will see how problematic Confederate could be. The only alternate retelling of history I’m interested in seeing is what it would have been like if the slave trade never existed not if they never abolished slavery. But, there’s power in our voices send your tweets, formal complaints and whatever other form of protest to prevent this mockery of our history to be created.
